Baltimore-Based CSA Medical Raises $12.6 Million in First Round
Baltimore — CSA Medical, a Baltimore-based developer of devices that flash freeze and treat diseased tissue inside the body, said on Tuesday it has raised $12.6 million in its first round of funding, which included a new investment from Blue Heron Capital. The company, which said it already is in discussions with investors about a potential second round, plans to use the proceeds to support the launch of its technology platform. The technology, which uses an endoscopic tool to spray extreme cold liquid nitrogen, is currently being used to treat esophageal disease at nearly 80 U.S. cancer centers and academic teaching hospitals.

Rockville-Based Supernus Raises $42 Million to Prepare Drugs for Launch
Rockville, Md. — Supernus Pharmaceuticals, a Rockville-based specialty pharmaceutical firm developing treatments for disorders of the central nervous system, said on Friday it has raised $42 million through a pair of transactions. The company said it generated $27 million from the sale of its TCD Royalty unit, as well as another $15 million from the issuance of venture debt. Supernus said it will use the proceeds to prepare for the commercial launch of its two lead product candidates in epilepsy, as well as to further develop its pipeline. “We have been able to raise more than $165 million through a series of five non-dilutive financing,” said Jack Khattar, the company’s president and CEO.

Roanoke-Based PixelOptics Names Brett Craig as President and CEO
Roanoke, Va. — PixelOptics, a Roanoke-based developer of electronic focusing eyeglasses, has named Brett Craig as its new president and CEO. He succeeds Ronald Blum, who will become chief visionary officer while maintaining his role as chairman. Craig previously served as the president and COO of photochromic lens company Transitions Optical. “Ron’s vision and
leadership were critical elements to bring [the company's technology] from concept to market. Moving forward, Brett’s expertise will be invaluable for the success of the company,” said board member Gary Kurtzman, managing director in the Life Sciences Group at Safeguard Scientifics. PixelOptics’ emPower eyeglasses feature transparent liquid crystal layers in each lens that
electronically focus when needed, with no moving parts. The company last April raised $35 million in a round of equity funding, led by Safeguard Scientifics.

Mid-Atlantic Bio Welcomes Bio West Virginia and Women In Bio as New 2010 Partners
For the first time, the Bioscience Association of West Virginia (BioWV) and Women In Bio (WIB) will partner with Mid-Atlantic Bio for the 2010 Mid-Atlantic Bio Conference
taking place October 27-29 at the North Bethesda Marriott Convention Center in Bethesda, Md.
As 2010 strategic partners, BioWV and WIB will join event hosts the Tech Council of Maryland/MdBio (TCM/MdBio), the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association (MAVA), and the Virginia Biotechnology Association (VaBIO) to create an even stronger platform for the combined communities of their industry constituents to come together at this year’s conference. Both BioWVA and WIB serve different segments of the expanding biotechnology industry, each important in the industry ecosystem. It is anticipated that both organizations will have strong representation from their respective membership groups at this year’s conference.
The Bioscience Association of West Virginia (BioWV) is that state’s official bioscience organization and is a part of the Council of State Bioscience Associations (CSBA). It serves West Virginia biotech companies with education and helps to increase public awareness of the biotechnology industry in the state.
Women in Bio (WIB) is a national organization dedicated to encouraging entrepreneurship and furthering the career development of women active in the life science industry. WIB is expanding nationally but has its
roots in the Maryland/DC/Virginia corridor.
